Family Members and Caregivers

When a friend or family member develops a mental health condition, it's important to know that you're not alone. Family members and caregivers often play a large role in helping and supporting the millions of people in the U.S. who experience mental health conditions each year. Many family members and caregivers experience the same thoughts and questions you might be having now.

All Classes Are Free. Registration is Required.

NAMI Family Support Group

The NAMI Family Support group is specifically for family members and loved ones of adults with a mental health condition. It is led by NAMI trained family members who have lived experience.

As with all other groups, this group is free and confidential. Participants share how the struggles and successes of their loved ones affect their lives. Some of the issues discussed are how to deal with the feelings of powerlessness one feels when a loved one is an adult and cannot be forced into treatment. It emphasizes partnering with loved ones to arrive at decisions made together in an atmosphere of cooperation.

Facilitators and participants alike share valuable information and feedback from their own experience.

NAMI Lowcountry offers twice monthly Family Support Group meetings:

  • via Zoom on the 2nd Thursday each month at 7:00 p.m. Registration is required.

  • In-Person (mask may be required) on the 4th Tuesday each month at 10:00 a.m. at Lowcountry Presbyterian Church, Bluffton

NAMI  Family-to-Family

NAMI Family-to-Family is a free, 8-session educational program for family, significant others and friends of people with mental health conditions. It is a designated evidenced-based program. This means that research shows that the program significantly improves the coping and problem-solving abilities of the people closest to a person with a mental health condition.

NAMI Family-to-Family is taught by NAMI-trained family members who have been there, and includes presentations, discussions and interactive exercises.

"The support group facilitators and attendees were respectful of other people's experiences and were non-judgmental when there were different ways of handling things."

"Before I took the course, I felt alone and overwhelmed dealing with my daughter’s mental illness. By taking this course, I have met others who are going through the same things I am and have learned about many resources that I never knew existed."

"I wish I'd known about this seven years ago when the problem began. I felt safe in this class. I was able to talk about things I haven't been comfortable expressing elsewhere."
