About Us

Our Vision provides information, support, and education to individuals, families and caregivers affected by mental health conditions in our five-county service area. Our Mission at NAMI Lowcountry improves the quality of life for all those affected by mental health conditions. We advocate and provide educational and support programs promoting recovery with dignity, hope and removal of stigma. In 1988 a handful of Beaufort County families, who were all trying to cope with the mental illness of a loved one, met through their association with the Coastal Empire Community Mental Health Center in Beaufort. They formed the Beaufort Alliance for the Mentally Ill and continued to meet informally to support each other and find ways to educate the community about serious mental illness. In 1991 NAMI Beaufort County was officially recognized as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. In 2012 NAMI Beaufort County was named NAMI Affiliate of the Year from over 1,000 affiliates nation-wide. In 2015 we changed our name to NAMI Lowcountry to reflect our goal of providing mental health education and services in all counties served by Coastal Empire Community Mental Health Centers (Beaufort, Jasper, Hampton, Colleton and Allendale).
